What Do I Need To Do To Apply For U.S. Citizenship?

At Warner Law in New Jersey, we handle immigration law matters, including green card applications and steps towards United States citizenship. If you've had a green card for five years or more, you tick one of the primary boxes for applying for U.S. citizenship through naturalization. Those married to a U.S. citizen might even be eligible after just three years. There are other criteria that need to be met – you must have lived continuously in the U.S. for five or three years, depending on your marital status. Good moral character, basic skills in English, rudimentary understanding of U.S. history, and knowledge of the functioning of the U.S. government are also necessary.

Successfully acquiring U.S. citizenship bestows upon you almost all rights enjoyed by natural-born U.S. citizens. If you're keen to acquire the privileges that come with being a U.S. citizen, Warner Law is ready to navigate you through the process. Do you think you're eligible? Begin your naturalization journey with us today.

How Do I Start the Process?

At your initial meeting with one of Warner Law's seasoned immigration attorneys in New Jersey, we will conduct a thorough assessment of your eligibility for naturalization. If you are found to qualify, our dedicated team will assist you in gathering all the necessary information required to complete the USCIS' N-400 form, which serves as your official application for U.S. citizenship. Should any additional documents be needed to support your application, we will compile a comprehensive checklist and provide you with the necessary guidance for their collection. Furthermore, we will equip you with detailed sample questions to help you prepare effectively for your upcoming interview.

Once all materials are meticulously organized, our team will guide you through the process of completing the N-400 form and ensure its timely submission to USCIS. For assistance with navigating U.S. citizenship applications, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with a knowledgeable Warner Law immigration attorney today.

What Will Happen at My Interview?

At Warner Law in New Jersey, you'll be required to bring your green card and state ID or driver's license to the meeting to confirm your identity. During this meeting, a USCIS officer will review all the responses you've given on your N-400 form. They will ask you to verify whether the information is still accurate. If there have been any amendments, you'll need to disclose those changes and offer evidence, if necessary.

The officer will also ask you several questions similar to those from your green card interview. You will be requested to read and write sentences in English. At the end, there will be a 10-question quiz on U.S. civics and history. Answering six of them correctly means you have passed the test. Although it might seem daunting, with the right preparation, it's quite manageable. The team at Warner Law can assist you in getting ready for everything you'll encounter during the meeting, enabling you to feel at ease and appreciate the procedure.
